Living With the Past: Old Cairo – Documentary
Cairo is one of the few medieval cities in the world that remains relatively intact. LIVING WITH THE PAST is a filmic portrait of Darb al-Ahmar, a neighborhood in the heart of the old city now facing a process of radical change.
Produced by Elizabeth Fernea (producer of the Women in the Middle East Series) this film documents a unique approach to historic preservation, one that combines social and economic development with monument restoration.
LIVING WITH THE PAST follows several restoration projects in progress in Darb al-Ahmar, including: the Great Gate of Bab Zuwayla (1092 A.D.), the Mosque of Emir Qijmas al-Ishaqi (1481 A.D.), the Church of the Virgin (600 A.D.), the Walls of Saladin (11th & 12th centuries A.D.). In 2017, Egypt’s government announced it would build a new capital city 45 kilometers outside of Cairo, the current capital. It was a shocking announcement since Cairo, a city of more than 10,000,000 people, has been the capital of Egypt for decades.
The government claims that Cairo has become too overcrowded and that moving the capital will give both Cairo’s residents and government workers more space. But this excuse is not new. For decades, Egypt’s rulers have been building brand new cities in the desert. None of them have solved Cairo’s density issue. And based on how construction is going, this new capital won’t be a solution either.

The Dark Side of Egypt Nobody talks About! 🇪🇬
The Dark Side of Egypt Nobody talks About is a video about Traveling to Cairo Egypt and why my experience visiting this country was very difficult. I explore the Egyptian Museum, the Pyramids of Giza, The river Nile and the Khan el-Khalili. The Egyptian Government has made it very difficult for tourists to experience Egypt easily, which is evident from most of the online videos. I hope this changes in the future.

For millennia, the grand pyramids of Egypt have towered over the desert sands, captivating and mystifying all who lay their eyes upon them.
In fact, everything about the great ancient civilization that once seized the lands remained a mystery.
That is until July 19, 1799.
A French soldier discovers a large stone, about 35 miles east of Alexandria, during Napoleon Bonaparte's Egyptian expedition.
Unearthing a written language that had been “dead” for thousands of years.
The translations would prove to be the key to unlocking the secrets of an entire civilization.

These projects have been incorporated into a mammoth social, cultural and economic neighborhood improvement scheme.
Across the globe monument preservation often means that people are displaced, and surrounding neighborhoods are demolished. Not so in Cairo, where efforts are underway to not only rescue endangered monuments but to improve the standard of living of the affected communities, in this case the people of Darb al-Ahmar.
